I’ve never understood why this movie was controversial. MIDNIGHT EXPRESS was derided by many critics as being anti-Turkish, which appears to derive from the fact that every Turk in the film is a rapist, a murderer, thief, or some other type of low-life. However, considering that the film primarily takes place inside a Turkish prison, such criticism is absurd. MIDNIGHT EXPRESS is a great film that will make you think twice about smuggling drugs through a country whose prison system is one level slightly above hell. Its the remarkable true story of Billy Hayes, a young American caught smuggling weed through Turkey and sent to prison. In this scene, Hayes has just been sentenced to life in prison after already having spent 3 years behind bars with the expectation and promise that he would soon be getting out. In this scene, Hayes finally vents to the judges and lawyers for screwing him over.
